Reducing the risk of falls in older adults
Around 1 in 3 adults over 65 and half of people over 80 will have at least one fall a year (NHS, 2021). Sadly, falls which result in injury are the leading cause of mortality in older adults (CSP, 2019). Physiotherapy can help identify a patient’s risk factors and develop a suitable treatment plan that mitigates the risk of falls. These plans will focus on improving strength and balance through targeted functional exercise.
How Young at Heart can help
Young at Heart Physiotherapy specialises in developing tailored treatment plans for older adults (65+) who have had, or are at risk of, falls. All programmes include:
- Conducting a full physical assessment to understand the patient’s functional abilities
- Establishing appropriate treatment goals aligned to their individual needs
- Developing a detailed treatment plan consisting of functional exercise and practical recommendations
- Providing a printable guide and videos outlining key exercises
- Assisting the patient to practice and progress with their treatment plan
- Providing advice to family members and/or carers to further support the patient and help them identify potential hazards in the home environment
